Why Book Buddies Matters
Correlation between reading proficiency and academic success identified in many studies

We attended an Atlanta-based Kindergarten thru 8th grade charter school and, throughout those years, we observed friends and classmates struggling with reading. Often times we could recall the challenges arising in the early elementary years. The challenges were often magnified once students transitioned to the zoned Atlanta public high school. There seemed to be a connection between difficulty and lack of interest in reading and overall academic struggle. As we explored the development of Book Buddies, we found vast amount of research that confirmed these observations. Study after study showed a correlation between reading proficiency and future academic achievement.
According to a study by the Annie E Casey Foundation, “Early Warning! Why Reading by the End of Third Grade Matters,” reading proficiency in third grade has a direct correlation to success in high school and beyond. Their study found a link between reading proficiency level in third grade and likelihood of high school graduation.
Book Buddies was founded to share a love for reading and to help young students set themselves up for future academic success.
